Chickens have lived in the islands of Hawaii for centuries, however the very first commercial poultry operation began in 1903 when Mr. Charles H. Bellina imported a flock of a thousand laying hens for his Palolo Valley ranch.
Over the century, family farms all over the islands ventured into the poultry business to help supply a growing Hawaii with much needed eggs and chicken. In Palolo Valley, Waialae Valley, Ewa Plains, Kaawa, Kalaheo, all over. The egg farm became a neighborhood stop. The eggs were eaten within days of being laid. Eggshells sprinkled in the vegetable garden.
As the neighborhoods grew, so did the city and Waikiki. By the 1980's, there were 21 commercial egg farms and they were supplying Hawaii with 85% of its eggs. Today, twenty years later, four remain. KK Poultry Farm, Maili Moa, Mikilua Poultry Farm, and Peterson Upland Farm. All are family farms. All are families who have spent generations practicing the art of tending chickens and eggs, weathering the challenges that come with keeping alive a farm in the age of the superstore, and holding true to a sense of purpose that comes with providing something as lovely as fresh food for your own community.
Here to be shared with you is a what they could gather of their long histories. From their family to yours. From their farms to your kitchens. Most of the farms welcome you to buy their eggs fresh off of the farm. Many families continue to make their weekly stops for their weekly supply of eggs. Generation after generation.
This is one more tried and true tradition, one more part of old time Hawaii, that is worth keeping.
