Maili Moa Egg Farm Mark Takaki opened his Maili Moa egg farm in Waianae in 1998, but the story begins way before that.

It begins with Mark's father, Don Takaki, who became a specialist in raising layer pullets for most of the egg farms in the state. And it involves the kind of dedication, courage, and resourcefulness that helps family farms continue to bring food to our tables.

Here is Mark, sharing their story:

In 1966 my dad was managing a hog farm in Laie for Carnation Company. They liked his work, and asked him to move to Waianae and manage their pullet operation in 1967. He agreed, and that is how my family got started in the industry.

I was born in 1969 and grew up playing on the farm and started helping at a very young age. I graduated from college with a degree in agriculture and had intended to take over the family farm.

There was an opportunity to have my own farm in 1998 and I took it. The Kiyabu farm in Maili was getting ready to shut down (because Mr. Kiyabu had some health issues and didn't have anyone to take over) so my dad told me ‘Why don't you go lease the farm from him’, so I could have my own business and he could still sell his pullets to me. So with my dad's help that's how Maili Moa LLC was started. My earliest memory of Maili Moa was – WOW I have 70,000 birds, how am I going to sell all these eggs? – I didn't have any accounts, only farm sales at the time. It took a little while but I hustled and got all kinds of restaurants and wholesalers to buy my eggs and later my dad set me up with the Medeiros farm store on Kauai. And I was able to sell all my eggs.

Maili Moa Egg Farm To this story, Mark adds:

The most rewarding part of the business is when a customer comes to the farm and says "You guys have the best eggs, better then mainland eggs" that always makes me feel good. I would like to see my farm thrive and be profitable and help provide our state with fresh island eggs for years to come.

Maili Moa sells their eggs, white and brown in a variety of sizes, fresh off their farm. They also are famous with local kitchens for their stewing chickens.

Maili Moa is located in Waianae, right behind Maili Elementary School, at 87-136 Kaukamana Rd.

Hours of operation are Monday thru Saturday 7:30am to 2:00pm and Sundays 8:00am to 12:00pm.

* Gardeners and farmers would be happy to know that Maili Moa also sells compost manure.
